A SELF-declared ‘caliph’ wants to impose his own personal ‘kingdom of heaven’ on the world. Can he do it, and what is a ‘caliphate’ anyway? Caliphate. It’s ominous: It’s a word which evokes images of a medieval world of swords, harems and tyrannical power. It’s mystic: It’s a word which implies religious rule, secret rites and powerful prophets. It’s a word being turned into a world in Iraq and Syria. It’s a ‘kingdom of heaven’ where you can’t smoke, drink or be laid to rest in a grave. But you have to smile. It’s this world believers hope to impose upon the world’s 1.5 billion Muslims — as well as much of the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
