THE state’s longest-running conspiracy theory, the Heiner Affair, has reached its final chapter, with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions opting not to pursue an entire Labor Cabinet for shredding documents alleged to have been related to child sexual abuse. Almost exactly 12 months after the recommendation was made by the state’s new Chief Justice, Tim Carmody, Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie said the matter would not be pursued. Mr Carmody, who headed the Carmody inquiry into child protection, recommended in July last year that the government consider referring the document shredding to the DPP. The shredding occurred in early 1990 as the new Cabinet under Labor premier Wayne Goss dealt with statements and tapes produced by the Heiner Inquiry into the old John Oxley Youth Detention Centre. The Carmody inquiry established that, contrary to long-running allegations, the documents had nothing to do with accusations of child sexual abuse.
